Comment: Editors Deep Purple Picks

Well, not exactly. However, I'm well known for Deep Purple related fanaticism, although mine errs towards Mk III and Mk IV, not really being a Gillan fan. So, this is my current list of Deep Purple and related tracks that have been getting serious plays.

  1. Deep Purple - Wring That Neck (BBC Session) from 'The Early Years' CD - stunning instrumental tour de force from Deep Purple Mk 1, this is an an excellent introduction to the first version of the band, with an excellent booklet and some rarities.
  2. Iommi / Hughes - I Go Insane from 'Fused' CD - whodda thunk that after all these years Glenn Hughes and Tony Iommi would come up with such a remarkable album, with this the nine minute highlight.
  3. David Coverdale - Queen Of Hearts from 'Northwinds' CD - one of my favourite albums of all time, where Lord David of Coverdale gets the perfect blend of blues, soul and rock - this track is the prototype for Whitesnake 78 - 81 - the golden years.
  4. Rainbow - Tearin' Out My Heart from 'Straight Between The Eyes' CD - although I'm playing the US best of, 'Catch The Rainbow', the best compilation by far. This is the power ballad to end all power ballads.
  5. Glenn Hughes & Friends - Coast To Coast from 'A Tribute To Tommy Bolin' CD, although as its an old Trapeze track it kind of misses the point, but this eight minutes of Glenn at his live peak.
  6. Zephyr - See My People Come Together from 'Going Back To Colorado' CD. MInd you this CD is a Russian limited edition, so I suspect it may not be 100% official. Anyway, saves me wearing out my 1971 vinyl which shows Tommy Bolin starting to develop his remarkable style.
  7. Captain Beyond - Sufficiently Breathless from 'Sufficiently Breathless' CD. Rod Evans got a bad press from his Mk 1 Purple days, but post his sacking, he helped produce some stunning work with Captain Beyond. And, trivia buffs. this also features Reese Wynans, later to emerge in the latter day Double Trouble with Stevie Ray Vaughan.
  8. The Tommy Bolin Band - The Grind from 'Live At Ebbets Field' CD. God, there's some rubbish floating about on CD, issued by the so called Tommy Bolin Archives, but when you fight your way through the chaff, you do get some gems. And really, there will never be enough Tommy Bolin CDs.
  9. Deep Purple - Fire In the Basement from 'Slaves And Masters' CD. Yay! Gillan gets ousted (briefly), Joe Lyn Turner arrives, Purple make best album since reformation, all blues, soul and rock, then it all falls apart as grumpy Gillan wanders back in. Shame.
  10. Glenn Hughes - You Keep On Moving from 'Burning Japan Live' - Glenn does loads of Purple tracks, world rejoices, especially on 7 minute version of 'Come taste The Band' classic.

Moan, groan, I don't care, thats what the forums are for. I know what I like. Over and out.
